She’s like Nietzsche’s “last man,” who asks, “What is love? What is creation? What is longing? What is a star?” and then blinks. Eileen has no real convictions, no real aspirations. Moshfegh shows us, with this character, the dangerous connections between boredom and nihilism. ![]() X-ville and her father are pretty horrible, but the real problem is just. ![]() She wonders if she might have stayed in her small town-curiously named X-ville-if her father had only been a bit more violent.Įileen’s problem is that she finds life boring what Eileen never considers-and this is where Moshfegh’s gifts for dramatic irony and moral subtlety are especially apparent-is that Eileen herself may be boring. He is an abusive alcoholic, who bullies and even assaults his teenage daughter: “In my last years with him my father would occasionally wrap his flat hands around my pencil-thin throat and threaten that he could squeeze the life out of me any time he felt like it.” Eileen, both disturbed and disturbing, flees her home early on, but not for the reasons you’d expect. Eileen, her new and best novel, is a love story told by a young woman who doesn’t understand love and who is leaving behind the only man she really loves, her father. Ottessa Moshfegh’s narrators exhibit a curious combination of extreme moral nihilism and a desperate need for violent, unforgettable experiences. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Forever in Blue by Ann Brashares![]() Brashares credibly recounts the emotional turmoil surrounding the girls' love, peer and family tribulations. On an archeological dig in Turkey, Bridget finds herself attracted to a professor (who's married). Enrolled in a summer painting class at Rhode Island School of Design, Lena falls for a fellow student and also receives a surprise visit (his specialty) from Kostos, her former Greek beau. She wants to help find real murderers and not play repetitive games that agents believe will prepare her to become the perfect profiler. However, the training part of the program isn’t enough for her. She can find the slightest details about someone and use them to solve puzzles. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.ĭefinitely not Cassandra Hobbes, a profiler recruited by the FBI to be part of their program. Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head-and under her skin. What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides-especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own. That is, until the FBI come knocking: they’ve begun a classified program that uses exceptional teenagers to crack infamous cold cases, and they need Cassie. But it’s not a skill that she’s ever taken seriously. Piecing together the tiniest details, she can tell you who you are and what you want. Seventeen-year-old Cassie is a natural at reading people.
